As many of us prepare either to celebrate in the next few days, or to enjoy time off while our clients celebrate, the bags and boxes of unsorted paper waiting to be dealt with can build up as we quickly shovel it away from the areas where our guests will be. 🙂
In a recent poll I did in my Facebook group, the main consensus was that paper and emails feel like the heaviest literal (as opposed to emotional) clutter.
Well it’s perfect timing, as we have an Intensive coming up to address this very topic.
Whether you are preparing to join us next Sunday or you’re doing it all on your own, here’s the simple Joumor Methodology to deal with paper clutter:
- Prepare the environment where you’ll be working. Clearing a table top, a couch, or a bed (and putting a clean sheet over your working area if necessary) will give you a comfortable amount of sorting/working space.
- Get your supporting resources together. Empty the shredder (if you have one) and recycling container, get bags if necessary, and bring them over to your workspace with files, a pen or marker, and post-its or blank pieces of paper.
- Choose an amount that you can sort and take care of in less than 45 minutes. There’s usually a fair amount of paper clutter built up. Choose a pile that will feel satisfying but not overwhelming to get through.
- Get out your Joumor Reorganize Yourself Kit or write out the categories you’ll be sorting your pile into such as Recycling, Shredding, To Do, To File, etc.
- Set your timer for 7-9 minutes
- Sort your pile into categories. It can be very tempting to start taking action. Don’t! Unitask and keep sorting.
- When timer goes off, set it again for 19-29 minutes
- Take action, starting with the easiest thing first. Put the pile in recycling, shred those documents, file, make files and file, call the bank, etc.
- When timer goes off, put your project away. One of the #1 sources of clutter is leaving projects around. Ideally, you selected the perfect amount and got through it all. If not, find a good place that you can put this minimized pile and easily pick up where you left off another time.
- Rinse and repeat another day.
This process is specifically designed for those with ADD and ADHD- allowing our brains to unitask in a timed period and then taking clear action after we have succeeded allows us to execute the action with higher dopamine and thus make better, more effective decisions. That’s why it’s important to do the easiest thing first, you will feel the win, win, win with each success.
