Roger Bannister was a mild-mannered 25-year-old Brit who, in 1954, broke the literal and psychological barrier (people thought you would die!) of running the mile in just under 4 minutes. As soon as he did so, he retired from sports to become a neurologist.
His wisdom of what it took to break the world record is applicable to more than just running.
“The spurt is extremely wasteful because it is achieved at the cost of relaxation,” he went on, “which should be maintained throughout the race. The athlete’s style and mood change completely when he accelerates. His mind suddenly starts driving an unwilling body which only obeys under the stimulus of the excitement. The earlier in the race this extra energy is thrown in, the greater the lead captured, but the less chance of holding it.” (1)
The spurt is extremely wasteful.
Relaxation should be maintained throughout the race.
The athlete’s style and mood change completely when he accelerates.
His mind suddenly starts driving an unwilling body which only obeys under the stimulus of the excitement.
The earlier in the race this extra energy is thrown in, the greater the lead captured, but the less chance of holding it
In other words, you should break a world record in running being relaxed so your style and mood don’t change.
OMG!
Do you rely on deadlines to take action?
To:
- Study for that test
- Pay your bills
- Turn in proposals
- Clean the house in time for company
- Run the numbers on April 14th
- and on and on…
Do you rely on False Energy? In Joumor that’s what we call not setting yourself up to win: not preparing, not having the right information, not showing up early, not preparing your environment, not communicating with your team…and hoping to pull it all off at the last minute.
I was the queen of False Energy, (which also made me the Queen Clutterer). And even though I knew there was a better way, I’ll be honest, I resisted and still resist sometimes, because False Energy is a reliable source of drama, even if only to ourselves.
You can only get so far on False Energy, because it burns all the energy you need for the rest of your life. You can turn in that proposal at 2am, but you’re probably jeopardizing, oh, your health, your relationship/s, your reputation…and possibly your sanity!
You can do things the way you’ve been doing them, and maybe no one will ever know the frenzy and adrenaline it took for them to get that way.
But when you are ready to go to the next level, to break your own record, and possibly that of the world, it’s time to Joumorize: to set yourself up with all you need to succeed, and then relax as you shatter the limits of possibility.
What would change if you were prepared, confident and relaxed?
